Supporting the Armed Forces Community

Our business is pledged to the UK Armed Forces Covenant.
What is the Armed Forces Covenant?
"To those who proudly protect our nation, who do so with honour, courage, and commitment, the Armed Forces Covenant is the nation’s commitment to you."
"It is a pledge that together we acknowledge and understand that those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, and their families, should be treated with fairness and respect in the communities, economy and society they serve with their lives."
In fact, we went further to demonstrate our commitment to this community and earned a Silver Award status with the Defence Employer Recognition Scheme.
Special invite to a focus group
So you can imagine we felt privileged to be invited to a local area focus group led by the Veterans Commissioner for Wales in our local Government. The aim was to determine if anything could be done to improve veterans' welfare services by discussing:
- How well known Ministry of Defence welfare services for veterans are;
- For those who have accessed them, how helpful these services were/are; and,
- What might be done to improve these services?
Emma the army veteran!
As a Royal Signals Corps veteran, I was more than happy to attend the event and give my own experiences on the transition back into civilian life after active service.
As a local business owner and employer, I was very interested in any potential opportunities for Fantom Factory to help with career development and STEM training for the community.
Outcome
There are various sessions running all around the United Kingdom, after which all of the feedback will be weighed up and (hopefully) acted on.
There were many recurring suggestions, such as improved communications, advertising more coherent services, and looking at why there are such differences in veteran care between the individual countries within the United Kingdom.
From Fantom Factory's perspective, we hope to help encourage more people from the veteran community into technical and engineering roles - through next-generation eLearning of course!
At the very least I had a great reason to visit the grand old Brecon Barracks for a day!
